Case Study
The Late Devonian Mass Extinction
Felix's involvement in the study of the Late Devonian Mass Extinction began after meeting Dr. Sarah Carmichael during the 2017 Explorers Club Annual Dinner in New York. Sarah invited Felix to Tennessee to capture portraits of her and fellow geologists and biologists as they studied the biome of a local cave system. What was intended to be a quick shoot turned into an 8-hour marathon expedition, lugging equipment, backdrops, and crew into a complex cave system safely.
The end result was a collage portrait and video project, produced, photographed, and directed by Felix.
Since then, Felix has become the trusted partner for many aspects of the project over the past half-decade. His work has taken him to far-flung locations such as Altai-Gobi in Mongolia, Ithaca New York, and the Utah/Nevada region, where he has produced portraits, editorial stills, drone shots used for mapping, and general atmosphere images to enhance the storytelling.
In addition to this, Felix has collaboratively written narrative scripts to help the geologists explain their work in a way that is understandable to 5th to 8th grade students, providing a valuable fresh voice to the educational space. This is an ongoing project in partnership with Winthrop and Appalachian State Universities to develop up to the minute educational content on the Late Devonian Mass extinction. As new discoveries are being made all the time, this represents the leading edge of education in this field. Felix’s work on this project has also been featured by National Geographic, the Smithsonian, the Museum of the Earth, The Explorers Log, The Explorers Club and many others in the scientific community.
He has also managed the creation of further video content, social media campaigns, as well as all production and travel arrangements, often with just one assistant.

SELECT PROJECTS
Mongolia - Geology
Felix worked with the Professor of Geology at Appalachian State University and The Mongolian University of Science and Technology on a National Geographic Society geological expedition to the Altai-Gobi Desert. The project, part of a multi-year geological study, saw Felix create Portrait, stills & video assets as well as consult extensively on social media and outreach studies, in addition to the work he has been doing to create educational content for geology students.
Egypt - Archeology
Accompanying Yale’s Director of Egyptology to the Upper Nile, Felix’s work highlighted the archeologists and locales of the important work being done to study the rock art along ancient trade routes between the Nile and the Red Sea. Making use of minimal equipment to create striking portraits in stunning locations, Felix’s work helped bring this work to an entirely new cohort.
‘BOATanical’ - Botany
‘BOATanical’, a pun combining ‘Boat’ and Botanical, a geological expedition Felix documented along the banks of the Connecticut River. With a focus on rewilding the river bank, giving a helping hand to the pollinators, Felix’s work drew attention to the plight of local ecosystems while also drawing attention to the project at large. Portraits like these reach people more meaningfully than the run-of-the-mill documentary stills.

A highly engaged audience
Felix’s audience is primarily made up of middle to higher income earners, composed of people who follow him for travel, photography, and education content. They are focused heavily on the east and west coast of the United States, with 31.4 pct in the US, 5 pct in the UK and the rest distributed across the globe. His followers are 60pct men, 40pct women, with 31.6 pct in the 25-34 range, 33.5 pct in the 35-44 age range.

The next upcoming project is a continuation of the Devonian Mass Extinction project, on June 6th to June 12th 2023 in the Great Basin

in January 2024, Felix will return to Cape Town, South Africa, where every type of environment is possible. Mountain tops, sandy beaches, the ocean, desert or urban environments. Felix’s favorite is the top of Table Mountain, which is an underrated ‘land before time’ unique ecological marvel.

With some new contacts in Namibia, Felix’s return towards the end of January 2024 will include not only tourist sites but also sites of scientific and geologic interest.
